At Change of Phase Consulting Group, meaningful community connection is at the heart of every successful newcomer experience. Through the Regional Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP), we’ve had the privilege of seeing local volunteers step forward to welcome new residents — offering more than just guidance, but genuine friendship and a sense of belonging.
In this post, we’re sharing a few inspiring stories from the volunteers who make a real difference in the lives of RCIP newcomers across our partner communities.
1. “It started with a cup of coffee.” – Emma, Fort St. John
When Emma first signed up to be an RCIP community volunteer, she didn’t know what to expect. “I just thought I’d help with a few errands,” she says, “but it turned into a lasting friendship.”
Emma met Shirin, a newcomer from Iran, through a local welcome event. They connected over their shared love of gardening and weekend markets. “Helping her navigate everyday things — from grocery shopping to learning how to compost — made me realize how small gestures can ease the transition into a new culture,” Emma reflects.
2. “My family learned as much as we shared.” – Raj, Vernon
For Raj and his family, volunteering was a way to give back to the community that had once welcomed them. Through RCIP, they began mentoring newcomers from India.
“My kids started helping with English practice sessions at the local library,” Raj explains. “It wasn’t just about helping others — it was about understanding different cultures, foods, and values. We all grew through it.”
3. “We build confidence together.” – Lisa, Coldstream
As a retired teacher, Lisa wanted to continue contributing to her community in a meaningful way. Through RCIP’s volunteer program, she began helping newcomers prepare for job interviews and workplace integration.
“It’s amazing to watch someone go from nervous and uncertain to confident and ready,” Lisa shares. “Every resume, every practice interview, every conversation — it’s all part of helping people feel like they belong.”
The Power of Community Support
These stories reflect what the RCIP is all about: creating pathways for newcomers to not only work and live in smaller BC communities but also thrive through meaningful relationships and support systems.
Community volunteers are often the bridge between uncertainty and comfort — helping newcomers transform new cities into homes. Their kindness, patience, and openness build a stronger, more inclusive community for everyone.
A Thank You to Our Volunteers
We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to every volunteer who dedicates their time, energy, and compassion to supporting newcomers through RCIP. Your contributions are vital to the program’s success and the well-being of our communities.
